volunteers are the heart and soul of habitat for humanity

Have some time on your hands? Want to make a real difference in your community? Join our volunteers! If you've got the will, we've got the way. Swing a hammer on a build site. Stock shelves at a ReStore. Provide administrative support for our affiliate office. Help out at our fundraising events. And feel good knowing that you're giving a hand up to local, low-income families. Don't take our word for it. Read what some of our volunteers have to say about being part of the Habitat experience.

why volunteer?

Helene (Midland):

"I’ve been volunteering for Restore Midland for the past 3 years. Dedicating my time to the Midland ReStore helps me connect with my community and contribute my time to a cause that I care about. Giving back, by volunteering, provides me with a natural sense of accomplishment. Working with the staff surrounds me with positive vibes - and it’s a lot of fun!”

Bob (Sudbury):

Bob Vaillancourt is a retiree who volunteers at the Sudbury ReStore. "Volunteering keeps me active and gives me a sense of purpose. Having nothing to do with my time is not something I want to contemplate. I enjoy the socialization with my fellow workers. And I enjoy the feeling from helping others in this community and everywhere Habitat for Humanity operates.”

Bert (Huntsville):

"I find it satisfying that I am helping in different ways. I know Habitat benefits the community greatly with their housing efforts and I hope I am also helping the store workers,” says Bert Young, a Huntsville ReStore volunteer. Bert explains that he loves the friendliness of the ReStore and community. "I also try to keep active, fit, and healthy. It's a win-win. Helping out in the store helps me out in return - both physically and mentally.”

Anne (Orillia):

A four-year volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, Anne Hayward of the Orillia ReStore says she likes to give back to her community in any way she can. "I enjoy the customers, as well as the people who work and volunteer here. It's a fun place to be. And you get to help out at the same time.”

Kirk (Orillia):

A venerable presence at our Orillia ReStore, Kirk ensures our donated merchandise hits the floor in tip-top condition. Why does he do it? "I enjoy meeting people and helping them when I can. When I started I joined a new family. I love going to work!"

ReStore volunteer

When you help out at Habitat ReStore, you help your community. ReStore proceeds cover the majority of Habitat’s operating costs, so your donations can go directly toward building affordable homes. You'll be interacting with donors and customers - and some pretty terrific staff! As a ReStore volunteer you could be accepting donations, prepping and pricing them for sale, stocking shelves, helping customers with their purchases, and more. If you're looking for variety in a volunteer job, you've come to the right place!

Our Salvage Team volunteers are our rescue crew. Whether it's a full kitchen removal, window and door recovery, or fixture retrieval, if our donors are upgrading or replacing, they can call us to remove it to sell in our ReStores. If you're looking to throw a little muscle behind your volunteer efforts, our salvage team will welcome you with open arms.

Volunteering as a group of 5 or more? There are great opportunities for corporate groups, school students, and community and faith groups to volunteer with us on our build sites, in our ReStores and at our events.

Our Habitat homes are truly the homes that love built. They’re constructed almost entirely by caring volunteers, with the support of dedicated, skilled Habitat for Humanity staff. It takes many caring hands to build a Habitat home. Whether you’re a contractor or have never picked up a hammer in your life, we can use your help!
